We had some time to look it over and we all agreed that is a beautiful car. The Solstice Coupe has some of the best lines of any coupe on the market today. It's so much more impressive in person on the road. Pictures don't do this car enough justice. This particular car was a very rare 5-speed GXP. Seriously wicked!

We checked the car out to see what products of ours would work on the car and possibilities for future Coupe-specific bits. There's still no doubt that we'd love to get our hands on our very own Solstice Coupe!

kappaSPRINGS by Eibach

We are driving enthusiasts at heart here at Kappasphere. Our kappaSPRINGS by Eibach are one of the best examples of our passion for great handling. We worked closely with Eibach to develop the perfect drop amount and spring rates for the Kappa chassis. The setup we landed on is one that will optimize handling without a harsh ride.

The drop in ride height of 1" in the front and 1.3" in the rear lowers the car's center of gravity to minimize body roll. This will make the car much more stable and neutral, especially at initial turn in. Stiffer springs also do their part in keeping the car flat through the corners.

click here to view Solstice stock vs. Kappaspehre

The spring rates we chose minimizes the rear end squatting under hard acceleration and the nose diving under hard braking. All of this, including the reduced body roll, is accomplished without loosing the car's great ride. We developed these springs to give you maximum performance in a street-friendly package.

Our base Sky was able to smoke much higher horsepower Kappa cars in the canyons with these springs. You'll be able to embarrass some heavily modified Solstice and Skys with little else than the kappaSPRINGS.

We are generally a function over form company. It just so happens that these cars look phenominal with these lowering springs. Slotted rotors continuously clean the surface of your brake pad and extract the hot gasses produced by heavy braking. Cross-drilled rotors are prone to cracking from each of the drilled holes.

The durable, one-piece KSRdiscs will give you stellar braking performance on and off the race track for a long time. Kappasphere's parent company, Sector111, uses similar construction on its two-piece ULTRAdiscs (see our S111 blog for more info), which sees very heavy track use on Lotus Elise and Exiges.

Slotted rotors, like our KSRdics, are the preferred configuration for brake discs in motorsport. You get the maximum friction surface, constant brake pad cleaning, excellent heat dissipation and durability. The truth is, professional race teams spend massive amounts of time and money dialling in the perfect brake balance. Whether you prefer braking hard in a straight line before the turn or trail braking (braking as you're entering the turn), keeping the car balanced under braking is absolutely essential for good lap times.

You don't need a million dollar race car with brake bias controls or a team of chassis engineers to get the perfect brake bias either. Properly selected brake pad compounds are just as effective at giving you proper brake bias and performance. Pontiac Solstice driver Don Knowles' SCCA Championship winning team and Hawk Performance have already done all the hard work - with some special assistance from GM. The two Hawk brake pad compounds they selected gave Don Knowles' Solstice perfect brake balance. The DTC70 front brake pads & DTC60 rear brake pads were the compounds that helped Don Knowles' team win the SCCA Stock Runoffs B Championship.

These race-compound pads are THE track-day pads of choice for the Solstice and Sky. If you track your Kappa roadster, we highly recommend this setup. You can't go wrong with a championship winning combination!

We are good friends with the former GM Ride & Handling Engineer who helped dial these brakes in. We wanted to see if the reBAR would fit with his current exhaust set up.

We dry fitted the reBAR initially and discovered the SOLO exhaust sat too low and didn't allow the reBAR to be bolted in. It took some adjustments, but, we were able to install our reBAR on a Al's GXP Solstice with his SOLO GXP Street Race exhaust.

Here are the steps we took to make this set up work:

We loosened the three clamps attaching the Solo exhaust.

After loosing up the clamps we pushed the reBAR up against the exhaust and hand tighten it in place.

Now that the reBAR was in place, we lined the exhaust up and re-tightened the clamps so the exhaust was secured at its highest position.

NOTE: There was minimal clearance between the exhaust and reBAR. The customer was aware of the potential rattle but really wanted this solution and decided to go ahead with it. Its also a good idea to recheck all the bolts and clamps after the test drive to make sure they remained secured.

When the install was completed, I took it out for a test drive to make sure there were no issues and that everything remained in place. There was no rattle detectable and everything felt extremely solid.

For you GXP owners with the SOLO exhaust system, our reBAR has been confirmed to fit on your car! The run took us through various hills and twisties of San Diego County.

The run itself was a BLAST! I really had a chance to put our MINI to the test. We have many NM bits on our car (intake, torque arm insert, sway bar, springs, and discharge pipe) along with some Enkei lightweight wheels, Toyo tires, monkeyBAR and Schroth Profi 4 point Harness. This run was the perfect opportunity to test the new parts.

The first thing I noticed was that our car definitely accelerated a lot quicker. I'm sure this was due to our induction kit and discharge pipe along with our lightweight wheels. It was a great improvement over stock. The second improvement I noticed was the improved grip that the car displayed. I first experienced this when I entered a corner a little too hot and the car stayed planted through the turn. There was minimal body roll. I had a big sense of relief and knew that this run was going to be fun.

During the first leg, I did have problems sliding around in my seat. The stock seat belt wasn’t much help for me through these twisties. Luckily I did have the monkeyBAR & Schroth Harness installed; however, I wasn’t strapped in. When we stopped for a quick break, I put my seat forward and strapped in tight with the harness. From this point on, the drive was a piece of cake and a lot more enjoyable. It was great to hang out with so many modified MINI’s.

The run ended for me when we reached Escondido. Once again thank you West Coast Mini’s for a great run. I meet a lot of great people and saw many cool MINI’s. Can wait for the next one!

reBAR does fit with Magnaflow 3" Exhaust

Last week we had a customer of ours drive down to our shop from the Bakersfield area. He was interested in a couple of the bits we offer(KSRdiscs, reBAR, brake pads). The one concern he had was if our reBAR would fit with his Magnaflow 3" Exhaust. We tested this during our R&D stages with another customers Sky and confirmed it fit. However since the release of the reBAR some have claimed that it doesn't fit with this exhaust. Well, now was the perfect time to test this again.

The reBAR does fit. Here are some pointers to make it work.

You have to make sure the exhaust is installed at its highest position.

The clamp that connects the pipe to the exhaust at the rear of the car is the main area to focus on. It has to be tightened with the pipe inserted to the exhaust as high as possible.

Tighten the reBAR at its lowest position.

We found that by doing this you can make it fit without a problem. So, for all of you that have been waiting on purchasing one due to your Maganflow exhaust, now is the time to get one and enjoy all the benefits of the reBAR.

Thank you Bakersfield customer for all of your help!

Ecotec Expertise

Our partnership with Secant now affords us real expertise with the Ecotec powertrain. What our friends at Secant can do is deliver a properly tuned solution. Engine calibration and mechanical integration at OEM levels is what these guys do daily. We will be plugging it into Secant's Exige. We're undertaking this minor surgery at our shop this weekend. This motor is fully built to withstand the added power that will be generated thx to the new TVS supercharger that we are bolting to it. This is the same blower on the new ZR1. It is very efficient and can move massive amounts of air. When I arrived to the shop on Saturday morning, I was eager to get the new Enkei's mounted and install the NM-ENG billet aluminum tie-bar.

Everything is pretty straight forward when it came to installing the wheels. As long as you have all the necessary tools you shouldn't have any problems. We all agree that the car looks a lot better with the new wheels on. The Enkei RPF1 wheels are hub centric, light weight and fit perfectly. There's no guess work in lining them up on the hub.

NM-Engineering's billet aluminum tie-bar was next to go on our Cooper S. This billet aluminum tie-bar, often referred to as a strut bar, mounts easily to the top of the two front strut towers, located in the engine bay. There is no interference with the stock intake, hood or NM's high-flow induction kit. The quality and attention to detail in this strut bar is really amazing. Everything has been well thought out, including: install instructions, mounting pads and each nut and bolt. All the hardware fits flush and torque specs are provided.

An example of NM-Eng's attention to detail is the machined pockets on the mounting pads that accommodate the upper strut bearing locator pin. The less-esthetically-pleasing solution to this is drilling a hole straight through the the mounting pad. NM-Eng's method is much cleaner and better looking.

Another great detail NM includes is the two bolts connecting the rod to the mounting pad. This design prevents any pivoting that would occur if only one bolt connected the rod to the mounting pad. This, along with the billet construction, makes for a super-rigid system.

We chose the black bar to contrast well with our blue NM-ENG high-flow induction kit. We especially like the blue adjustment/locking nut that matches our induction pipe, springs, and sway bar. The nut allows you to adjust the length of the bar to fit your MINI perfectly.

After everything was buttoned up and torqued down, I took it out for a test drive. You could definitely feel the difference in acceleration, stopping and turning. The car, with the new wheels/tires and tie-bar, feels like a totally different MINI. It's much lighter and tighter.

Enkei Wheels + NM Billet Tie Bar

Our MINI got an earlier valentines gift today - new wheels and strut bar. Now that we've upgraded the suspension (review coming soon), the tires have become the weak link. We looked at the market options and opted for a light weight wheel and some high performance tires. We've chosen the Enkei RPF1 as they are very light and affordable. I decided to get the TPMS bits as well so we can keep the ecu happy. Here are the specs:

17x7
$229 (each)
Offset: 43mmBackspacing: 5.62"Bolt Pattern: 4-100Rec. Tire Size: 205/45-17Weight: 14.6lbs.

We're sticklers on proper fitment and lightweight. Saving unsprung weight is a mantra in our company. I thought long and hard about sticking with a 16" wheel but ultimately decided to go Plus 1 for potential BBK clearance. I ran 16" wheels on my R53 MINI and was very happy with how it sucked up the road/canyon irregularities. This time, bigger brakes are something I needed to consider when choosing a wheel. Our Plus 1 solution will fit well and should deliver some great canyon carving along with occasional track use.

We chose the Toyo T1R tire in a 205/45 ZR17. We ran these on our Sky and feel they are a great tire for all season (CA) performance. I considered fitting the R888s we run on our Exige and Atom, but opted to run tires that should deliver more life. They would have been a blast though clearance is an issue I need to investigate further as they are wider...maybe sometime in the near future?!

Springs and Torque Arm

The NM Engineering front and rear springs are all installed now. Everything fit like a glove! The car's still up on the lift right now, so we don't know how low it will actually sit with the new setup. It should sit about an inch lower, though. The blue springs, sway bar, and induction kit look really good installed too.

The engine torque arm was installed also. That installation was extremely quick and straight forward. Now, we'll take the car off the lift and see how she does in round 2 on the dyno. We'll post the before and after dyno graphs here shortly.

NM Rear Sway Bar!

Slowly but surely its coming together. We did it on our way up to Willow Springs Raceway in Rosamond, CA for a Lotus Challenge Series race.

It clicked passed the 1,000 mile mark on I-10 near Ontario, CA. The rear seats were folded down to accommodate a few sets of brake discs, brake pads, tow hooks, and other Lotus bits. The MINI did a superb job of hauling two men and a bunch of gear almost 300 miles in total comfort.

I'm about 6'6'' tall and never once felt uncomfortable or cramped even with all of the extra gear in the car. The MINI seems to magically grow in size once you get in it.

The next step is to have it weighed and dynoed. Then, we can start installing all of our tasty bits!

Chevy HHR owners listen up!

One of our customers recently had to put his kappa away for the winter months. We haven’t confirmed it yet; however I wanted to share this with all of you just in case you also have a Chevy HHR and would like to try it.

First MINI Canyon Drive

Took the MINI out for it's first spirited drive. Break-in miles are almost done so I started rev'ing her up to 4500rpms. Overall impressions are still positive. I took her on a favorite run through DeLuz Rd. It is a fun road that combines many elements: smooth, bumpy, technical, slow, fast and plenty of elevation change.

The MINI S is a fun canyon carver but has a few areas that I would like to improve. The brakes felt mushier than I would prefer. I want some better initial bite. Pads, fluid and lines should do the trick.

Better tires should also help. The added sidewall of the tires (195/55R16) was welcome on the bumpy sections of this road. We are going to order some lightweight wheels and high performance tires shortly. The turn-in was good but the lean was too much. We should have a rear sway bar coming soon that will help. We will install the springs as well and the car should slice and dice DeLuz....

The pedals, steering wheel and gear selector relationship is pretty good. The pedals are almost too well spaced. I'd forgotten how easy it is to heel and toe in a BMW. Way easier than a Lotus. The gear selection takes a bit to get use to it. A light touch is needed or you pass 2nd and enter the reverse section of the selector. I definately don't like the gear knob. This will have to change. Steering feel is good. Glad MINI has not lost that in this second gen car.

Blistering speed was not the objective. We will tune this car so it delivers good 'around-town' compliance yet still work the canyons. I'm sure we will get there shortly...

NM Engineering Visit & NM R56 Test Drive

I visited NM Engineering yesterday in Camarillo. They are the new MINI tuning arm of Neuspeed - a 33 yr old VW/Audi tuner. I've known of Neuspeed for many yrs, in fact I purchased a front strut bar for my '91 GTI 18 yrs ago! They had a great reputation then and have continued to develop well sorted solutions for various makes.

I met with Joseph and Jerry and toured their facility. It was quite impressive. Neuspeed bring so many years of experience in tuning sport compacts to the MINI market. This level of expertise and engineering is something that will be a great boon for folks wanting to tweak their MINIs. Obviously I am a bit biased as we are a NM Dealer, but I was impressed with their approach to engineering proper solutions. Their parts fit the car very well, unlike several competitive products that I've seen that fit poorly.

As they say, the 'proof is in the pudding' - so I had a go behind the wheel of their R56. I drove our bone stock R56 to NM and had it for comparison. The NM car was equipped with the stock 17" wheels/tires along with the NM Alpha spings and rear sawy bar. It had their intake and engine torque arm insert and exhaust system. The car was a blast. It handled better, had excellent acceleration and sounded great. Their MINI remained very comfortable and easy to drive. The ride was still great with even quicker responsiveness. The exhaust had NO drone. I tested it in 6th gear cruising along the 101 and it was nice and quiet. It had a sporty sound that I would refer to as a mature sound - I'm so sick of the boomy exhausts that are out there and get more excited by the systems that still allow you to have a conversation with passengers.

Needless to say, I can't wait to install all of these parts on our MINI. First I want to get past the break-in period and dyno our car. Then the mods can begin.....

We plan to have a tech session at our shop with NM Engineering this Spring. Stay tuned.

Solstice Coupe Rendering

Chris sketched a sweet version of the Solstice Coupe. The front fascia and wheels are particularily aggressive. We thought you'd love it - we sure do! He was in town visiting some friends and had to head back up north the next day. He wanted to get these on as soon as possible. However it turned out that he had a GM CAI in his car. We had never test fitted our pipes with this CAI. I offered to take a look at it and if it fit help him with the install. It turned out great. There wasn’t any fitment issues with this configuration. We can now say that the Fujita Intercooler pipes for GXP and Redline do work with a GM and Fujita CAI.

Yesterday Chris had the opportunity to attend the LA Auto Show. Many cool cars were present but the one that we have been waiting patiently for is the Solstice coupe. We saw one at SEMA and now at the LA Auto Show. The car looks great in silver which really highlights the surface forms. This time we were able to see it with the hardtop in place. There appeared to be no interior changes. Overall a very clean and muscular car. Especially from the rear. We can't wait to start working on one.

New Solstice Coupe at SEMA!

While attending the SEMA show this year we have finally seen the Solstice Coupe in person. I am sure that you will find this NEW product a must have for your kappa. Here's the latest picture.

We'll reveal it next week!

Guess our new product....

Kappasphere has been quietly working on a new product for our Kappa cars. We're pretty excited about this bit of innovation. Amazingly it is an idea that was spawned on a trip with our Solstice to the very first West Coast Kappa Car Club Meet. Yes, it has taken us a while to get it together but so many other ideas took precedence. In truth, this may be one of our very best ideas.

We want to start previewing this item with you in stages. Abel suggested we get some guesses from you....so please vote on our poll listed to the right.

Here's a HINT: It is black.

Hello All!

We have blogged with our parent company, Sector111, in the past.
